Before We Start | My Conceptual Prelude:
Mettā is the Pāli word commonly translated as loving-kindness; Maitrī is its Sanskrit counterpart.

What interests me here is not only the meaning of the words, but the felt quality they can carry through sound, attention, emotion, and intention.

For me, that makes Mettā an interesting subject for Prana Literacy: not as a breath technique, but as a way of noticing how an inner state can be experienced, shaped, and expressed.

That is the lens I’m bringing to this week’s featured editorial.

Hi Friend,

Key to the classes I’ve been teaching for the last few decades has included
the Metta Meditation. I’ve never taught it because I thought I had mastered it, and therefore had the right to teach it. I simply knew that I needed to be completely absorbed by it—and that sharing it with others was part of that immersion.

Mettā is often practiced as a form of call and response, allowing the words to be heard, repeated, and gradually felt rather than simply understood.

Just as important as their meaning is the felt resonance of the words—the way sound, emotion, attention, and sensation move through the body.

Visualization can be used throughout the entire practice: first holding oneself in awareness, then another person, and finally widening the field toward all sentient beings, Mother Earth, and beyond.

In this way, Mettā becomes more than something we say; it becomes something we can feel moving within us and extending outward.

I hope you find this as helpful as I have.

Between the Covers

Sharon Salzburg holds a special place in my heart.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet her several times almost 35 years ago, and have crossed paths with her several times since.
One of those times I was traveling through New Mexico and stopped in Taos to stay at a monastery. Sharon just happened to be leading a discourse and meditation that evening. There were only three of us there with her.

She was recording her discourses and meditations at the time, but none of her equipment was working that evening. I just happened to have a microphone hooked up to my phone and was able to record it for her.

Such a treat to be able to assist her. I’m a big fan and can’t wait until her new book comes out.

You can pre-order it here.
